Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class at Crucible BJJ Sheffield - What to Expect

Written by Mark Hayes – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Simon McGovern with over 40 years of martial arts experience.

Walking into your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class can feel exciting… and a little intimidating.

Most people who contact us at Crucible BJJ Sheffield tell me exactly the same things before their first session:

“I’m not very fit.”
“I don’t want to look stupid.”
“Everyone else will probably know what they’re doing.”

The reality is that almost everyone who now trains confidently once felt exactly the same way.

After more than 40 years involved in martial arts and many years teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I can tell you that the first class is usually far more relaxed and welcoming than people expect.

Here’s exactly what happens when you walk through the door.

1. A Friendly Welcome (Not an Intimidating Environment)

When you arrive at your first class, you won’t be thrown straight into training.

Instead, you’ll be greeted with something very simple: a handshake and a smile.

You’ll meet either:

  • The instructor running the class

  • Or one of our senior students

We’ll quickly get you to fill in a liability waiver, then show you around the academy so you know where everything is.

If we have a gi (the traditional training uniform) that fits you, we’ll lend you one for the session. If not, gym clothes are perfectly fine for your first class.

Our goal is simple: make sure you feel comfortable before you even step on the mat.

2. You Don’t Need to Be Fit or Experienced

One of the biggest myths about starting Jiu-Jitsu is that you need to be fit first.

You don’t.

In fact, many people begin training specifically because they want to improve their fitness and confidence.

At Crucible BJJ Sheffield, we regularly see beginners who are:
• Starting martial arts for the first time
• Returning to exercise after years away
• Looking for something more engaging than the gym

Jiu-Jitsu improves fitness naturally as you train. You don’t need to be in shape before you start.

If you're considering trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Sheffield, your first class will probably be far more relaxed than you expect.

3. What a Typical Class Looks Like

Even though our classes at Crucible BJJ Sheffield are all-level sessions, beginners are introduced to training in a relaxed and structured way.

A typical class usually follows a simple format so everyone can learn and improve together.

Warm-Up
We start with a light warm-up designed to get your body moving and prepare you for training.

Technique Instruction
The instructor demonstrates a technique and explains how it works, breaking the movement down step by step.

Partner Drills
You’ll practise the technique with a partner at a controlled pace so you can understand how the movement works.

Coaching and Guidance
As everyone practises, the instructor moves around the room offering advice and helping refine the details.

Optional Positional Training or Sparring
Towards the end of class there may be some light sparring or positional training. For beginners this is always optional, and you’ll normally work with someone more experienced who can help guide you through it.

The key thing to remember is that nobody expects beginners to know everything straight away. You simply learn a little more each time you step on the mat.

4. You’ll Be Paired with an Experienced Student

If you decide to try some light sparring or positional training, we’ll normally pair you with a more experienced student.

This is important because a good training partner will:

• Help guide you through what’s happening
• Keep things safe and controlled
• Allow you to experience Jiu-Jitsu at a comfortable pace

Even though our classes at Crucible BJJ Sheffield are all-level sessions, beginners are always supported. More experienced students remember exactly what it felt like to start and are usually very happy to help newer students learn.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has a strong culture of experienced practitioners helping beginners improve, and that’s something we value highly at our academy.

5. You Won’t Look Stupid (Everyone Was a Beginner Once)

Almost every new student worries about this.

The truth is simple:

Nobody expects a beginner to know anything.

Every black belt, brown belt, and experienced student on the mat once walked in feeling exactly the same way you might feel now.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has a reputation for being one of the most supportive and ego-free martial arts communities, and that culture is something we work hard to maintain.

6. What Makes Jiu-Jitsu Different from Other Martial Arts

Having trained in martial arts for over four decades, including Karate, Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts , one thing stands out about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu:

The culture.

BJJ academies tend to be very family-orientated and welcoming.

People train together regularly, help each other improve, and celebrate each other’s progress.

It’s not just about techniques - it’s about building a community where people support each other on the journey.

7. What Happens After Your First Class

Most people leave their first session feeling two things:

  1. A bit tired

  2. Excited to come back

After your first class, the next step is simply to start training regularly and building consistency on the mat.

Many beginners begin by training two sessions per week, which allows them to gradually improve their fitness, confidence, and understanding of the techniques.

Because our classes at Crucible BJJ Sheffield are all-level sessions, beginners quickly get used to training with a mix of experience levels. More experienced students help guide newer students, which creates a very supportive learning environment.

Over time you’ll start recognising positions, understanding how techniques connect together, and developing your own style of Jiu-Jitsu.

The key is simply to keep showing up and enjoying the process.

.

8. The Most Important Step Is Just Starting

Starting something new always takes a little courage.

But the hardest part of Jiu-Jitsu is rarely the training itself.

It’s walking through the door for the first time.

Once you do that, you’ll quickly realise that everyone around you remembers exactly what that first day felt like - and they’re happy to help you along the way.
